Mister Page accepts the social revolution and allows his wife independence and trusts her. However, Mister Ford mistrusts his wife and suffers from jealousy because of her freedom. Mister Ford is a man who resists the social revolution and change. Falstaff also resists change and transformation, which makes him a target for the wives’ schemes. It is interesting that Ford and Falstaff hold similar views of the women and are both victims of the schemes. Anne Parten points out that Ford and Falstaff, â€Å"may believe in the clichà ©s equating feminine independence and vivacity with a predilection for marital infidelity† (190). Ford and Falstaff view â€Å"vivacity† and merriment as a sign of loose morals. When Falstaff discusses his plans to seduce Mistress Ford he comments, â€Å"I spy entertainment in her. She discourses; she carves, she gives the leer of invitation† (I,iii 40-43). Falstaff clearly expresses how Mistress Ford’s â€Å"entertainment † is an â€Å"invitation† and we understand that he sees her attitude and personality as her being open to disloyalty. Falstaff also notes how â€Å"she carves† and â€Å"discourses† meaning that Mistress Ford is familiar with guests and comfortable with people, which makes her an appropriate choice for him to woo. Mister Ford demonstrates his outlook of his wife’s cheer being reason enough to doubt her honesty, when he says to Falstaff under the guise of Brooks, â€Å"Some say that, though she appear honest to me, /yet in other places she enlargeth her mirth so far that there is shrewd construction made of her† (I,iii 210-13). Ford believes his wife’s behavior attracts the possibility of infidelity and damages her â€Å"construction† or reputation. The â€Å"merry wives† utilize their merriment in deceiving the men and succeed because the men are so deluded by what they accept as true. Although, merriment is the cause of the wives’ schemes, which are a mark of their independence, the intent of the wives’ game is honest. Mistress Page defends her good cheer saying, â€Å"We’ll leave a proof, by that which we will do, wives may be merry, and yet honest too./ We do not act, that often jest and laugh; tis old but true, â€Å"Still swine eats all the draff† (IV,ii 99-102). Her good humour and happiness allow her to be â€Å"honest† and her games or â€Å"jest and laugh† allow her to be more free and in control of her life instead of being â€Å"still†. Her games also indicate her intelligence and her desire to be aware of what is happening around her. Her active, merry ways keep her from eating â€Å"all the draff† or swallowing her independence. The schemes and their outcome expose the power the women have. Nancy Cotton asserts that the wives’ games expose their independence and also serve to â€Å"emascu late† the men (Cotton 324). Proof of this is seen when Falstaff says to Ford, who he knows as Brooks, â€Å"I went to her, Mister Brooks, as you see, like a poor old man, but I came from her, Mister Brooks, like a poor old woman† (V,i 15-17). The wives power is evident in how they humiliate Falstaff him by forcing him to dress as a woman. He is symbolically castrated and also beaten be Ford as he leaves Mistress Ford’s house. The strength of the women is contrasted with the weakness of Falstaff and Ford. Ford’s delusions and jealousies serve to weaken his character and make the women characters appear stronger. His delusions or corrupt mental state signifies an avoidance of reality. After seeing Falstaff dressed as â€Å"witch† Evans comments on his mental state when he says, â€Å"Master Ford, you must pray, and not follow the imaginations of your own heart; this is jealousies† (IV, ii). It’s important that Evans tells Ford that he shouldn’t trust his â€Å"own heart† because it divulges how fanatical Ford’s peers think he is. In Act IV, Scene ii, Ford says, â€Å"Well he’s not here I seek for† and Mister Page’s response is â€Å"No, not nowhere else but in your brain†. Again we see clearly that it is believed he is imagining that Falstaff is having an affair with his wife. Ford is alone in his fervor of catching his wife being disloyal. After the first search for Falstaff in the house Page says to Ford, â€Å"Are you not ashamed? What spirit, what devil suggests this imagination? I would not ha’ your distemper in this kind for the wealth of Windsor castle† (III, iii 199-202). Page questions Ford’s state of mind and alludes to Ford’s illusions as being supernatural. His friend’s view of him get’s more serious here. Ford’s response is â€Å"Tis my fault, Mister Page, I suffer for it† (III, iii 203). Ford’s response is an admission of weakness for all his friends to see which helps render him impotent. Ford acknowledges that he was wrong and at â€Å"fault† which marks the beginning of Ford’s confusion. It’s interesting that Ford is called out by those who are indifferent or accepting of the new social way. Both Ford and Falstaff lose in their schemes with the wives. Falstaff is shoved into a laundry basket, tossed in the mud, dressed as a woman and humiliated in the end. Ford is embarrassed in front of his friends and has his sanity questioned. Ford and Falstaff’s failure to figure out the wives’ games is indicative of their resistance to social changes. Both men must transform to avoid further humiliation. Ford must accept his wife’s social independence and Falstaff must change his disrespectful, lustful ways. In the end they are both transformed. After Ford sees what he believes to be a witch, he is roused from his stance of resistance (Carroll 194). It is not long after that seen when Ford’s character appears completely changed (Carroll 194). He is jealous and delusional no longer. He accepts his wife’s power, even telling her, â€Å"Pa rdon me, wife./ Henceforth do what thou wilt/ I rather will suspect the sun with cold/ than thee with wantonness. Now doth thy honour stand/ In him that was of late an heretic, as firm as faith† (IV,iv 6-9). Ford’s transformation is finished. His wife is now free to do what she â€Å"wilt† because he has â€Å"faith† in her. Ford is clearly giving in to his wife’s independence and freedom. Perhaps this transformation saves Ford from being totally humiliated. Falstaff, however, is not so lucky. Falstaff is forced to transform in the end and becomes the symbol of Actaeon, the lustful hunter who is caught watching Artemis and her nymphs bathing in the woods. In the myth Artemis (or Diana) turns Actaeon into a stag, for her dogs to hunt and tear to pieces (Parten 195). The Actaeon myth is paralleled by the â€Å"Herne the Hunter† myth, a similar more English version of the old greek myth (Carroll 198). The myth of Actaeon is alluded to a few times in the play, but clearly references Falstaff when Pistol encourages Ford to act against Falstaff (Carroll 198). Pistol says to Ford, â€Å"Prevent, or go thou, like Sir Actaeon, he, / With Ringwood at thy heels/ O, odious is thy name!† (II,I 106-8). There is no doubt that the â€Å"he† is Falstaff, especially given the â€Å"Sir† that has been added to Actaeon’s name to make it a more fitting metaphor for Pistol to use because of Falstaff’s status as a knig ht and Pistol’s status as below him. Falstaff refers to himself as a stag when he says, â€Å"For me, I am here the Windsor stag, and the fattest I think i’the forest† (V,v 12-13). He is sacrificed and the women have won. He says to the wives, â€Å"Divide me like a bribed buck, each a haunch† (V,v 24). He surrenders to them and the humiliation. Falstaff’s unwillingness or maybe even inability to change has led him to this end. The wives keep their power and their merriment because of the games they play. For their part, the men have lost their internal struggle against the social change Mister Ford and Falstaff’s surrender ensure this. As the course of the comedy indicates, the wives are innocent of any real foul play and their intentions all along are honest. They teach Falstaff a much deserved lesson and, whether or not they mean to, they change a jealous husband into a trusting, happy one. An increasing amount of research tries to link the human brain with machines allowing humans to control their environment through their thoughts. Research on BCIs began in the 1970s, but it wasnt until the mid-1990s that the first working experimental implants in humans appeared. Following years of animal experimentation, early working implants in humans now exist, designed to restore damaged hearing, sight and movement. The common thread throughout the research is the remarkable cortical plasticity of the brain, which often adapts to BCIs, treating prostheses controlled by implants as natural limbs. With recent advances in technology and knowledge, pioneering researchers could now conceivably attempt to produce BCIs that augment human functions rather than simply restoring them, previously only the realm of science fiction. 2. Brain Machine Interface (Brain Computer Interface): In this definition, the word â€Å"brain† means the brain or nervous system of an organic life form rather than the mind. Computer† means any processing or computational device, from simple circuits to silicon chips (including hypothetical future technologies such as quantum computing). A Brain Machine Interface (BMI), sometimes called a Direct Neural Interface or a Brain Computer Interface, is a direct communication pathway between a human or animal brain (or brain cell culture) and an external device. In one-way BCIs, computers either accept commands from the brain or send signals to it (for example, to restore vision) but not both. Addictions are a fast growing concern, it has branched off and caused many problems whether it be related to drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, Internet, or eating. Addictions are something society faces everyday. Although there are many reasons behind why addiction are growing, and where they stemmed from, todays society has focused primarily on how someone with an addictions problem can seek help. Also the many Gaps and Barriers around addictions are enabling people who wish to seek help from receiving it. The increasing amounts of people with drug or alcohol addictions has increased vastly over the years especially among young teens who are still yet to be of age to buy alcohol. With addictions being a commonly known problem in society, there should be more awareness put out to people on how to help those with an addiction or more services that are equally accessible for those who wish to seek help on their addictions. Types of Addictions Drugs and Alcohol Even though drugs and alcohol is widely known as bad in society, people continue to abuse it. Once on has chosen to abuse drugs or alcohol continuously they lose the ability to say no to another drink or no to another puff of weed. Soon the person will continuously think about drinking or using drugs, and cannot wait to abuse either substance again. Generally there are two components that stem from drug addiction: physical and psychological dependencies. Physical dependency occurs when a drug has been used habitually and the body has become immune to its effects. Where as psychological dependency occurs where a drug as been used immensely and the mind has become dependant and the mind begins to become emotionally reliant on the effects. Either to feel pleasure or to relieve pain, then the mind does not feel capable of functioning without the drug. Internet Addictions Internet addictions not only include an over excessive amount of chat room participation, but it does not help their social or financial well being. Dysfunctional use of the Internet by children as well as adults can result in diminished participation in the family. Over thirty percent of Canadas population has reported that they use the Internet to escape from everyday life or problems. Either by finding someone else on chat rooms with the same problems or just playing games or surfing the web. Gambling Addictions Gambling has many traumatic effects in a persons life if it is abused the wrong way. It can cause people to loose their family; can put a person into bankruptcy, fraud, domestic abuse, theft or even homelessness. Pathological gamblers tend to be under the age of thirty. Six percent of gamblers in Canada commit suicide. The government profit from gambling in Canada is thirteen billion nationally. In Canada 340,000 people have a modern or severe case of a gambling addiction. Eating Addictions Food addictions affect mostly a persons health. Food addictions lead mostly to eating disorders, such as: obesity, diabetes, bulimia and food allergies. An eating addiction is signaled the same way in our brains as an alcohol addiction. Recent studies on rats have proven that eating triggers a pleasure receptor in our brain. Ten percent of people with anorexia or bulimia are male. Eight percent of children in Canada are obese, and twenty three percent are adults. Gaps in Services The majority of agencies have no costs, no referrals, are wheelchair accessible and have age limited restrictions. The new internet addiction has left a gap in services, simply because it went so long before it was discovered, agencies are just now figuring out ways to support this  addiction. This makes it hard for someone with an Internet addiction to seek help due to the lack of support out there for the general public to use. Barriers in Services The majority of services are available from ages thirteen plus. Which limits teens under the age of thirteen with addiction problems help. With todays society having an increasing amount of children drinking, this sets a bit of a barrier. Since there are no programs offered for children of a young age who have already begun drinking to seek help it allows the problem to grow instead of getting to it when it is still fresh and not yet a full-blown addiction. Although many services do not offer help to those who are disabled. Addiction services are generally offered only in English, which poses a problem for those who have immigrated to Canada or simply have grown up speaking a different language. The hours for addiction centers is limited, unless it is a housing service, most programs run on the nine to five clock, enabling those who seek help after hours from getting the service that is required by them. Showing how increasingly they are on the rise, and that day-to-day a new  addiction is born. Without services being available to the new born addictions they continuously grow and there is no way to receive help for them. The amount of young teens becoming addicted to things such as drugs or alcohol has grown increasingly and services are yet to be prepared for that situation. Many of the gaps and barriers within these programs or services are what prevent people from seeking the help they need and deserve. It has been proven that not only are addictions physical they are majority psychological and require a great deal of acknowledgement from family, friends, support groups, and government funded programs, so that people can acquire the amount of treatment necessary. With language and hours of availability being a barrier many people with problems are not getting the help they deserve, Canada needs to broaden its options when it comes to addiction programs, allowing twenty-four hour services for people with serious or mild conditions. If the programs continue to enable people from receiving help the amount of people with addictions will continue to increase. Being aware of the problem is the first step to solving one.
